Transformation of the Clinical Portal

University Health Network is a clinical healthcare and scientific research organization in Toronto that owns and operates four major hospitals:

  • Toronto Western Hospital
  • Toronto General Hospital
  • Princess Margaret Cancer Centre
  • Toronto Rehabilitation Institute

Challenge

The UHN required a strategic initiative to help improve patient care.  Clinicians were using old, outdated, inefficient tools which made accessing data and information a tedious process. The longer it takes for Infection Control Practitioners to perform analysis, the greater the risk of infection and spread of disease. The process of analysis was hampered by a lack of tools to assist the clinicians, which puts staff and patients at risk.

Solution

In partnership with UHH, Veriday provided technical subject matter expertise, creative design, architecture and software development services for the development of UHN’s new clinical portal.

Veriday’s solution built the foundation to connect care providers outside their organization to deliver a new holistic and patient-centric standard of care.  The portal helped clinicians to better analyze data, which would help to decrease infection risk and ultimately improve patient outcomes.  The results of the new clinical portal were threefold:

  • Saved Infection Control Practitioner (ICP)’s time by providing them with the information they need in a consolidated view to support analysis and decision-making, to prevent and/or reduce spread of disease within UHN;
  • Reduce the risk of infection for patients and staff through automated processes and decreased time spent in contact tracing/identifying patients at risk of infection; and
  • Created a portal platform that will provide the foundation to address the needs of additional clinical user groups in subsequent phases.
